For a truck, tolls are one of the biggest costs on a trip after fuel and the driver. They are also the cost most often left out of the profit calculation. FASTag rules have changed several times in the last year, and a new overload fee at toll plazas can hit tippers and heavy trucks directly. This guide explains the rules that matter to truck owners and how to track toll costs per trip.

Is FASTag mandatory for trucks?

Yes. India's toll operator IHMCL states that FASTag is mandatory for all class M and N vehicles, meaning four-wheelers and above carrying goods or passengers, from 1 January 2021. Trucks, tippers, tankers and trailers are all covered.

What happens if your truck has no valid FASTag?

IHMCL says a vehicle entering a FASTag lane without a valid tag is charged double the applicable toll in cash. The National Highways Fee (Third Amendment) Rules, 2025, in force from 15 November 2025, changed this to a graded structure: 2x the fee if paid in cash and 1.25x if paid by UPI, against the normal fee for a working FASTag. Government announcements in 2026 also say cash is being phased out at National Highway toll plazas, with reports giving different April 2026 start dates. Do not plan to rely on cash at the plaza.

If your FASTag is valid and funded but the plaza equipment fails to process it, the same rules say the vehicle passes without paying and receives a zero-transaction receipt. Every toll receipt must show the date, time, amount and vehicle class.

What makes a FASTag invalid for a truck?

  • Wrong vehicle class. IHMCL says a vehicle-tag class mismatch is detected at the plaza, and the tag can be blacklisted by the issuer bank with no new tag issued for that vehicle number.
  • Not on the windscreen. A tag that is not affixed, or is carried in hand, is treated as invalid.
  • Low balance. A tag without sufficient balance can be blacklisted. Recharge when the bank alerts you. Top-ups can be as low as Re. 1.
  • More than one tag. One vehicle may have only one active FASTag, and all earlier tags on the same vehicle are deactivated except the latest.
  • Incomplete KYC. A tag application needs the RC, the owner's photograph and KYC documents for the owner category.

The FASTag price is capped at Rs. 100 including GST, according to IHMCL. The FASTag Annual Pass is for private non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans, so trucks cannot use it.

What is the new overload fee at toll plazas?

The National Highways Fee (Fourth Amendment) Rules, 2026, notified as G.S.R. 279(E) on 13 April 2026 and in force from 15 April 2026, replaced Rule 10 with an overloading fee collected through FASTag or other digital means. In summary:

Load over permitted gross vehicle weightToll multiplier
Up to 10%No overload fee (normal toll)
Over 10% and up to 40%2x the base toll
Over 40%4x the base toll

The rule's own example is a three-axle rigid truck with a permitted gross vehicle weight of 28.5 tonnes: no overload fee up to 31.35 tonnes, 2x from 31.35 to 39.90 tonnes and 4x above 39.90 tonnes.

  • How weight is measured: by a notified weighing device installed at the toll plaza. Where no such device is installed, no overload fee is levied.
  • Reporting: the vehicle's details and excess load are reported to the national VAHAN register, so a separate action under motor vehicle law is possible. News reports cite a penalty of Rs. 20,000 plus Rs. 2,000 per extra tonne, so check the Motor Vehicles Act provisions that apply.
  • Where: National Highways only. A ministry memorandum of 14 April 2026 said the amendment would not be implemented in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Assam until the election Model Code of Conduct was withdrawn there.

How do you track toll costs per trip?

  1. Record each toll against the trip. Note the plaza, amount and time as soon as the deduction alert arrives.
  2. Match your bank's FASTag statement to your trip records every week, truck by truck.
  3. Flag odd deductions. IHMCL says you can report an incorrect deduction to its call centre within 40 days of the transaction. The bank then raises a chargeback, which normally takes 20 to 30 working days.
  4. Keep the tag funded. Set a minimum balance for each truck so no tag is blacklisted mid-trip.
  5. Compare routes. Total toll per trip and per truck shows which routes and loads really pay.

What should truck owners do now?

  1. Check every truck has one active FASTag, issued for the right vehicle class and fixed on the windscreen.
  2. Set a low-balance alert and a recharge routine per truck.
  3. Weigh loads against the permitted gross vehicle weight and leave a margin below the 10% line.
  4. Keep toll receipts and statements with your trip records.
  5. Treat toll as a line item in every trip, not a surprise.

Bohiba lets you record toll and other expenses against each trip so you can see real trip profit. Read our guide to tracking truck trip expenses, explore features or start on the free plan.
